As much as many people like to blame MBUSA for the updates to the interior on the 2001+ interior (which isn't what i have), the lack of integrated cup holders in the current interior pretty well identify that MBUSA didn't in fact have much to do with it, becuase in the rest of the world, drinking in the car is much less common, if not illegal in some countries. it simply depends where you're from whether they are "necessary".
The "factory" cup holder in the 1990-2000 are hilarious. Open the glove box which then lays flat. the back side of the glove box door pretend to be a little table with two small dents in it (like an airline tray) which you can set a very small cup on.
Many have an aftermarket cup holder installed in the location where your between seat console is, which are sufficiciently sturdy, but they aren't well held down at the front edge (becuase they need to flip out of the way to expose control bottons for windows or whatever)... which means if you stomp the gas or are on a steep hill driving up, the whole thing can tip backwards. Luckily it's only happened once to me and the lid stayed on the drink that had a straw in it. One day i'll install a fat little magnet to keep it in place... ergonomically clumsy still, but functions fine other than the "glitch".
The GL is undeniably american... and sadly boring. If you wanted to own a car with no outstanding features other than that it blends in and would still be perceived as reasonably expensive.
