Default New Tires

Last Friday I had to buy some new tires. I opted for the Kumho Road Venture APT KL51 (245/65/17). They were $109 each not bad and they have good ratings on TireRack.com. They are much better tires than the stock Michelin's. Here are some pictures of the new tires...

Tires look pretty nice. I had to replace mine on my '02 SLE last year. I opted for the Bridgestone Alenza H/L's, and have not regretted my decision to date. It was a toss between these and the Goodyear Fortera Triple Treads. I run Bridgestones on my summer car, and the warranty was a little better, so Bridgestones it was.

Just curious: What is it that makes the Kumhos "much better tires than the stock Michelins"?

I bought Kumhos for my bush-trucks in the past, but that was because they were the cheapest 31x10.5 radials around. Are they no longer "budget" tires?

I still have the Michelins on my Envoy but am getting to the point where I am starting to think of replacements. All I know at the moment is that I want to go with a taller tire (265/70?) in order to improve highway mileage: I'm doing a lot of communiting these days.

Cheers!

Gary

I believe, and I could be way off base here, that manufacturers use "seconds" for their tires on all vehicles. The quality isn't as good as you would get buying new from a tire shop (this helps reduce their manufacturing costs). Even if you were to replace the stock Michelins with a new set of Michelins, you will notice quite a difference. As for the Kumho's, I can't say as I have never owned a set.

I also would like to know what you base that statement on.
Thanks!
