Default oil change

I just recently got my first ever Envoy car. I don't know much about cars since this is the first time that I owned one. How long do I have to change oil and how often? I had the car for almost two months now. I was not informed by the previous owner of when was the last time it had its oil change. Is it ok if I change it now? Any help will be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You can change your oil at any time. With not knowing the service history of your truck, I would change it now. Most people will tell you to change it every 5000-6000km (about 3000-4000miles). Some are meticulous about changing it at the mileage or every 3-4 months. If you stick to the mileage, you shouldn't have any problems.

Our trucks are also equipped with a light on the dash that will come on when it is time for a change. The computer bases engine oil wear based on your driving style and operating conditions of the engine.

I use Mobil 1 5W 30 and change my oil every 5000 miles. I reset the oil monitor and go from there. I check my oil once a month to make sure I am not burning any oil as well.

I agree with the previous comments. I also suggest that you communicate with the previous owner to get to know stuffs about your truck, i.e. what modifications it had already underwent, what parts have been replaced already, the usual fuel consumption of the truck and other essential info that you would need in the maintenance of your truck.

Easiest and the best thing you can do for your Envoy or any car for that matter is to change oil on a regular basis. I have quite a few cars and have found the easiest way is to keep a record of each auto and when I changed oil when I had service work done. I keep a record of the date and who did the work and of course the mileage. I change oil every 3 thousand miles or sooner depending on your type of driving. Hywy driving you can go a few more miles than city. Stop and go city driving I would change every 1500 to 2000 miles. Any where you read about someone going 2 to 3 hundred thousand miles the first thing they suggest is to check all fluid levels at every gas stop and change your oil on a regular basis. This of course includes the filter.

Truck fleets often monitor the condition of the oil in their vehicles by having samples analyzed periodically. Oil samples are sent to a laboratory that then analyzes the oil's viscosity and acid content. Oil is then burned in a device called a spectrometer that reveals various impurities in the oil. From all of this, a detailed report is generated that reveals the true condition of the oil.

Oil analysis is a great idea for fleets and trucks that hold a lot of oil. But most consumers would have a hard time justifying the cost. Having an oil sample analyzed typically costs $12 to $20 for the lab work and report. Most quick lube shops charge $16.95 to $19.95 for an oil change. So why spend your money on a report that will probably tell you your oil needs changing? Just change the oil every 3,000 miles and don't worry about it.

Regular oil changes for preventative maintenance are cheap insurance against engine wear, and will always save you money in the long run if you keep a car for more than three or four years. It's very uncommon to see an engine that has been well maintained with regular oil changes develop major bearing, ring, cam or valve problems under 100,000 miles.
