Hey everybody, I just bought a 2002 SLE 4WD and there is a bit of a knocking noise coming from the engine when its' cold. Anything I should worry about, or is there any preventative maintenance I can do to avoid a bigger problem ? I also have a lot of wind noise coming from the driver's door, should I really try to bend the window frame in like the guy in another post did ? Thanks for any input
As long as you are gentle with the door, bending it is your best bet for sealing it. That is more than likely all the dealership would do. But, if you aren't comfortable with it, let them do it. That way, if something goes wrong, its their problem, not yours.
As for the knocking, my '02 SLE does the same thing. There is a recall out there though for certain VINs in regards to the cylinder bore liner cracking. This may or may not be of concern to you. I fall into this range, but it does not affect my truck at all. If you send me an e-mail, I can send you something on it for you to read.

Identify the source of the problem. Once you've identified and repaired discovered problems, your final check is to start the engine and make sure pressure is within your car's specifications.

Again, this sounds like a spam post. Like words are being plugged into a generic sentence. Can somebody else reassure my suspicions so I can act on this? Thx.
Ok, so what I was thinking about the knocking was a lot of people report getting start up noise (ticking, knocking, etc) on Non-Ac Delco oil filters, actually FRAM oil filters are notorious for causing start up noise.
Does the knock go away after the RPM's come back down?
What grade/type of oil are you using? The 4.2l's love synthetic oil.
it does go away after the engine warms up, doesn't seem like that big a deal. I just bouight the envoy so you know how it is, paranoid about every little noise. I don't know what kind of oil is in it, or filter, I'll keep what you said in mind for when I do the oil and filter

LOL...I hear ya on being paranoid about every little noise! You're going to become so attached to the Envoy, you'll look back and be glad you were proactive about the knocking.
If the oil hasnt been changed yet, I'd do that right away and put in synthetic. Do you do your own oil changes? They are really easy on the Envoys. If you do change it yourself, be mindful that the 4.2l has a 7 quart sump - it takes a full 7 quarts of oil!
If it's a main bearing, crankshaft, it's life is very limited.
It could ceaze up at any time.
It is very unusual to run bearings in this day and age, a noisy gudgeon can sound very much like a bearing.
I would get a second opinion, if they decide it's still a main bearing, then flick a second hand motor in.
I buy and fit good quality 2nd hand motors for around $450 for my cars, and can remove and install in a long day.
Wreckers often offer an exchange service, buy a motor from them and they will fit it for you, usually in a day.
Try this, when you are driving at 60 kmh can you still hear it knocking loudly? if so it's a bearing, if you can't, it's a gudgeon, and could last for ever.

If it sounds abnormal, then something is wrong. If you didn't notice it from the 1st day you drove it, then obviously something is wrong.
Typically, this is caused by poor fuel quality or a fuel octane that is too low for the engine. Check your owner's manual to make sure you are using the right grade.
Another common cause is carbon deposits in the combustion chamber, built up over time. Most reputable service shops offer a decarbonization service, generally referred to as a "fuel induction cleaning".
Yet another possibility is a failed "knock sensor". This sensor detectst the presence of detonation and informs your truck's engine management computer. It then adjusts the timing to reduce the knock. If this were the case, you may have a Check Engine light on on your dash.
When engine knocking is detected the knock sensor sends electrical signal to the ECU. Directionally as the compression ratio of the engine increases so does the required octane number of the gasoline if engine knocking is to be avoided. Engine knocking is in fact a pulse detonation and we all known what that can do an engine. Thus, the likelihood to engine knocking is reduced and the engine runs more smoothly. Engine knocking is the premature fuel combustion that can result in power loss of the engine. Engine knocking is compression detonation or pre-ignition of fuel in the power stroke of the engine. Engine knocking is normal for 4-stroke bike.
If you have an older car or a high performance car, you may need a higher octane gasoline to help prevent engine knocking and improve engine performance. In order to prevent engine knocking at high rpm's, NGK's high-spark #7 platinums are used. Before leaded gasolines were removed from the market, bromine was used in an additive to help prevent engine "knocking". Motor mount also help prevent or at least minimize engine knocking. There was a need for improvement in the refining process for fuels that would prevent engine knocking and increase engine efficiency. This prevent engine knocking which is very common at the time of a transmission kick down. MMT is a fuel additive, which is mixed with petrol in order to prevent engine knocking. Has been used in gasoline to prevent engine knocking. Lead was originally added to prevent engine knocking. The lead compound TETRAETHEL LEAD was added to gasoline to prevent engine "knocking".
