The first thing to be said about Tailgate Deflectors is they are not Spoilers or Wings. Though almost identical in kind and shape they are not designed to improve handling and/or speed of an automobile though they may add support. They are more functional to the maintenance and protection of a car than the vehicles performance.


Tailgate Deflectors are most common on SUV's and Crossover vehicles. They come in both plastic and metal though less common. They are designed to help the wind pass over your vehicle to reduce resistance which some say help on gas mileage. They are best used for helping the dust and dirty road particles from getting stuck on the rear windshield by providing an air path which extends past the back of the vehicle's rear windshield or tailgate curvature. They also help reducing the rainfall over the rear window, by acting as a ledge that extends past the down slope of the tailgate. This is especially useful if you do not have a rear window wiper blade. This keeps your vehicle clean and your line of sight unobstructed by the sticky, dirty film we all are very familiar with.
