I believe that there is a switch attached to either the transmission, or the shifter that tells the truck when it is in park. If this switch is faulty, it could explain why your having troubles with your key. The truck won't allow the key to come out without the truck being in park. This is how it was on older vehicles, but I'm not sure if that is how it is on the newer ones.
